TU/e newspaper Cursor interviews Ricardo Seguel - Ph.D. thesis

The newspaper Cursor of the Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) has posted a short interview about my Ph.D. Thesis.

The online version of Cursor with the interview can be found here (see page 10).
The pdf version can be seen here.
The interview is in Dutch, but I reproduce the English version as follows:

1) What is shown on the cover of your thesis?
Since the title of the thesis includes the concept of flexibility, I wanted to show it with something that could represent it in the broader sense. I always wanted to include some of the works of M.C. Escher on the cover. For me the picture also represents the flexibility of human beings to adapt to diverse circumstances in life, like me and my wife coming from Chile to the Netherlands for four years. That's also the reason of the strip with orange and light blue.

2) How do you explain your research to others at a party (i.e., as simple as possible)?
As in the introduction of the thesis, I use the example of a translator that has to listen to business men that want to do business. The translator has to communicate both sides to avoid misunderstandings. In the context of Enterprise Information Systems (EIS), the translator represents the adaptor in the middle that enables the flexible integration of companies to form supply chains.

3) Which person, apparatus or technique has been indispensable for your research (and why)?
I believe that the structured way of working and clear objectives for the project were indispensable for finishing the thesis in less than 4 years. My supervisors were also key to guide me during my research. Without these 3 factors it’s really difficult to be on track during the Ph.D.

4) How will society benefit from your research?
In the mid-term we’ll see more and more companies collaborating in business networks, integrating their EIS. Those networks will enable global and complex collaboration between companies, which will allow the innovation of business models, services, business processes and technology that, indeed, will impact society with better products and services in every domain.
If you want to have access to the complete dissertation, please let me know by e-mail.

Ricardo.
